Sander Berge said the group were devastated following Saturday's 2-1 loss at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a defeat that confirmed the Clarets relegation to the Championship.
Speaking after the game the midfielder felt the team had left everything on the pitch and that the side would bounce back next season.
“I'm devastated, as is the whole group. Came here today, believed in it, as we’ve done the whole season and played really well, I would say. Played with heart, played with character as we’ve done throughout the whole season. Especially the last ten games how we’ve fought back and showed that we are a Premier League team and everyone has to respect us.
“Obviously coming out getting the 1-0, still pushing, playing well, playing smart, managing the game well. It felt like it was there for us to take it and then, it’s hurting.”
It was a valiant effort from the visitors who needed a win to stay in the fight of Premier League survival. Jacob Bruun Larsen opened the scoring before Pedro Porro equalised seven minutes later. Despite resolute defending and chances of their own in the second half, Micky van de Ven dealt the hammer blow in the 83rd minute.

“It was tough to take at that point, they were going for it. We defended a bit more, they’re obviously a very strong side, managed the ball well. They needed to score but we knew if we could keep it tight at the back, we would get our chance on the break and unfortunately, they scored. We fought until the last minute, but it wasn’t enough so it’s a devastating feeling. But the fans were again brilliant, and I think they could see that we left it all out there.”
The travelling Clarets cheered the squad throughout the game, as they have all season - and Berge is grateful for the support.
“I think they’ve shown the identity of the Club, always fight back, be ourselves, be proud of the Club we play for, wear the shirt with pride. They set the tone every single week for us, and we go out there and try to make them proud.
“It didn’t happen this year, but this Club will definitely be back in the Premier League.”
With a young manager and young players, Berge was asked whilst it hurts today is this the end of a chapter not the story?
“The progress that everyone made in the Club, the hard work everyone has been putting in day to day, wanting to get better, wanting to get results at this level, wanting to compete with the best and that sets the standard for what’s to come.
“For us it’s about every day getting better and we’ve done that. And now it’s time to learn and reflect a little bit. There’s still one game to go and that’s the start of building towards getting straight back up next season.”
