Winger expresses delight after winning Goal of the Season

Manuel Benson says it 'means so much' to him after winning Burnley's 2022/23 'Goal of the Season' award with his magnificent title-winning strike against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

The Belgian's effort in the second-half of the East Lancashire derby proved to be the winning goal in a memorable 1-0 victory over Rovers to secure Vincent Kompany's side the Sky Bet Championship trophy.

Following a 16 goal shortlist, which included five Benson goals, his excellent finish at Ewood was voted 'Goal of the season' by the supporters via an online poll.

After receiving the award, Benson said: “It feels very good to receive awards at any time, so to win the Goal of the Season award I am very proud. I will put it somewhere nice at home and I really love it.

“It means so much. The long history between the clubs and the rivalry is so big so to score that goal and win that game, I couldn’t have written it better for myself.

“I think just the moment of it and doing it at Blackburn to seal the Championship. It meant a lot to the fans that night and that goal so maybe that’s what edged it over the other goals."

Benson returned to pre-season training on Monday with the rest of the first team squad and the forward admits he is happy to be back from the break and begin preparation for the new season.

“My summer was very good. I went away with my fiancé and I really enjoyed the time off but I’m happy to be back now and start the new season.

“It feels good to be back in. We have testing for the first few days then we will be on the pitch. It’s important for us get the testing done and make sure we are ok and ready for pre-season.

“It’s nice being back and seeing everyone again. I hope they all enjoyed their time away but I think everyone is ready and motivated now for the new season." Said the winger.
