Ashley Barnes has a century in his sights as he looks for a landmark goal against Manchester United.
Barnes is just one goal away from 100 in senior competition for his three different clubs.
And after a slow start to the current campaign, the Clarets’ striker would love to get it against United at Turf Moor and kick-start a scoring run.
“It would be amazing to get to the 100-mark,” said Barnes – who has netted 44 times in a Burnley shirt to go with earlier goals for Plymouth and Brighton.
“It’s a good achievement for myself but that’s not where I want to stop.
“I want to be the top goalscorer for Burnley in Premier League history, so I’ve got targets to hit and I set targets for myself.
“I know where I want to be come the end of the season. We’re obviously not half way yet and it’s not good enough from my point of view and that needs to improve.
“Hopefully this year I can hit the back of the net a lot more.
“I just need to put my boots on the right feet again and hopefully come the end of the season I can be the top goalscorer.”
Barnes is currently the leading scorer for the Clarets in the Premier League era with his 39 goals two ahead of team-mate Chris Wood.
Just one of those has come for Barnes so far this season – a headed goal in a 2-1 win over Wolves last month – with Wood the Clarets’ top scorer with three top-flight goals.
But both strikers have decent records against Manchester United, with Wood scoring in last January’s 2-0 win at Old Trafford and the pair both getting on the scoresheet in a 2-2 draw at United 12 months previously.
And Barnes knows another goal is due as Sean Dyche’s men bid to prevent United from taking top spot in the Premier League by enhancing the Clarets’ own recent run of form, which has seen them lose just twice in nine league games to pull clear of the bottom three.
“I know I’ve got to put pressure on myself to score and Woody is the same,” added Barnes, who missed much of last season and the start of the 2020/21 campaign through injury.
“As strikers we put pressure on ourselves and we know there are big chances in big games that we need to take.
“I feel very fit. There are obviously just the goals that need to come now. I’ve worked so hard to get to this situation and to be back in a team and I just need to finish it off with goals.
“It’s just one of those things that we have to get back to because that’s our job and that’s the brutal truth, we have to finish games off. We can’t rely on the others.”
