Welcome to Turf Moor for today’s game against Tottenham Hotspur. It’s my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to Spurs players, staff, directors and supporters joining us today.
This will be the second consecutive weekend we’ll be welcoming a team travelling from the capital and will in fact be our fourth Premier League fixture in a row against a London-based club.
The exciting 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace here last weekend took us to five points and no losses in that run, which also included the 3-1 win over Brentford and the 1-1 draw away to Chelsea. It’s great to see the team putting together a series of positive results that our performances have merited. Hopefully Sean and the team can maintain our good run of form against London teams this afternoon.
While we do sit 18th currently, I don’t think the table tells the full story with just one Premier League defeat – away to champions Manchester City – in seven. Football can be a game of fine margins at times and a bit of luck which could have turned a couple of draws into wins would see us in a very different position. But I think anyone watching the team recognises the high-performance levels and it’s great to see the fans continuing to give everything in support of them.
It will no doubt be a difficult test against a Spurs side full of quality and with a new manager in Antonio Conte. While we were disappointed to lose 1-0 in the Carabao Cup to them, the game was another tight affair so I’m sure they’ll take nothing for granted.
Away from the action on the pitch, I also wanted to recognise that today is our dedicated Rainbow Laces fixture, highlighting our ‘One Club for All’ ethos committed to driving out all forms of discrimination in the modern game.
Since coming into Burnley Football Club we’ve tried to live by the ‘One Club for All’ message, whether that is through investment in Burnley FC Women or ensuring the club takes steps towards ensuring greater representation both within the club but also through being a welcoming space for all fans.
Burnley Football Club endorses matchday ‘Respect’ and is against all discrimination in football or society. We’re supporting today’s Rainbow Laces fixture with a joint video message from the captains of our men’s, women’s and U23 teams and we stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community within sport and the wider world.
I hope you enjoy the game today and best of luck to Sean and the team.
Up the Clarets!
Alan
