Burnley Women took another step forwards in 2023/24, recording a club high finish of 2nd in the Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League.
The Clarets also won the Lancashire FA Women’s Senior Cup for a second season running and finished the campaign with two league matches at Turf Moor.
Burnley recorded 15 wins and three draws in their 22 league matches, posting a points total of 48 at an average of 2.18 points per game.
Rebecca Sawiuk’s team were unbeaten in their first 10 league games, eventually losing for the first time against Nottingham Forest on Sunday 28th January.
Their 22 league matches saw them score 54 goals, which translates to an average of just under 2.5 goals per game.
28 players took to the pitch in at least one league game and 16 of them found the back of the net, with Aimee Kelly and Millie Ravening doing so nine times each.
At the other end of the pitch Burnley conceded just 21 league goals and recorded seven clean sheets, with five of those attributed to Kirstie Levell and the other two belonging to Lucy Farrell.
As a result, the Clarets finished the campaign with a goal difference of +33.
There were a further seven games across three cup competitions, with three at home, three away and one at a neutral venue.
The Adobe Women’s FA Cup campaign was one to remember, with the team finishing as the competition’s top scorers with 23 goals in four games.
After a 9-1 second round victory over Alnwick Town in which Brenna McPartlan scored a hat-trick, the Clarets beat Coundon Court 11-0. McPartlan scored another treble that day, as did Kelly and Laura Elford.
In the Lancashire FA Women’s Senior Cup, a 6-1 semi-final victory over AFC Fylde was followed by a 9-1 triumph over West Didsbury & Chorlton where five different players found the back of the net.
The Clarets have won the trophy two years on the spin and will be hoping to retain their title next season.
In summary, Burnley Women played 29 competitive games in 2023/24, scoring 94 goals and conceding 30 to finish with an overall goal difference of +64.
Elford was the team’s top scorer with 17 goals in all competitions, followed closely by Ravening on 14, Kelly on 12 and Leah Embley with 10.
Embley and Georgia Marshall made the most starts with 24 each, and the former joined Lizzy Hamer in featuring in all 29 matches.
Goalkeeper Kirstie Levell was awarded for the quality of her performances with two end of season awards.
The former Leicester City stopper scooped the Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season prizes at the end of season awards/community fundraising night.
A key milestone in not only the season, but the club’s history too, was the team’s second appearance at Turf Moor.
2,068 fans were in attendance for the match against Liverpool Feds, with Rhema Lord-Mears and McPartlan scoring either side of an own goal.
2023/24 was the team’s third full season in the third tier of the Women’s game, and Head Coach Sawiuk is now preparing for another tilt at the division with the new campaign set to start in August.
