McNeil has been invited to train with the England Under-20 squad as a stand-by player ahead of games against Italy at AFC Fylde on Thursday night and away to the Czech Republic on Monday, 15 October.

The Clarets’ winger met up with the squad at St George’s Park on Sunday evening and is looking forward to the chance to work alongside the players under the guidance of Under-20s’ boss Paul Simpson.

“It’s a dream come true. It’s the first time and I was a bit surprised when it happened but I’m really happy. It will be a good experience,” said McNeil.

“It’s been an unbelievable start to the season and this call-up has just topped it off really.”

McNeil, who has come through the youth ranks at Burnley following his release from Manchester United, in 2014, signed his first professional contract in the summer before making his first senior starts in both the Europa and Premier League.

“So much has happened in a short space of time,” added the 18-year-old, whose full Premier League debut came against United last month.

“It’s just about taking it all in and taking it on, but it’s been a good experience so far.

“I’ve just been told this will be a chance to have a look around and get a feel for what it’s like to train with the lads and be part of the group.

“The staff here have told me to go and enjoy it and that I deserve it and show them what I can do.”
