The Clarets’ best chance of the game came with 15 minutes to play, as Mitch George broke through one-on-one with Preston ‘keeper Jimmy Corcoran, who denied George excellently with a one handed save.

Burnley started the match brightly and came close through Michael Fowler early on, as the striker dragged an effort just wide of the post.

Shortly after, the home side came close, as Darren Brannigan latched onto Jerome Jolly’s cross, forcing Harry Allen into a smart stop.

Brannigan had another chance minutes later, as the forward was played through on goal, before poking the ball just wide of the post.

And just before the break the hosts had another opportunity to take the lead, as Louis Potts rose highest in the area, before seeing his header sail just over the bar.

Early into the second half, Burnley came close through Kai Smith, as the tricky winger poked the ball inches wide of the post from Matty Rain’s low cross.

Fowler then tested Corcoran from range, as his 20-yard lob just floated over the keeper’s bar.

George then had the visitor’s best chance of the match, as the substitute broke forward on goal, before seeing Corcoran palm his effort away from close range.

And after neither side could find the back of the net, it went to a penalty shoot-out

Fowler, Mupariwa, George, Pruti, Smith and Conn-Clarke were all on target in the shoot-out, before Thomas’ spot-kick was saved on the seventh penalty.
