Wood scored for the first time since his two goals against Cardiff City in April all but secured the Clarets’ Premier League safety and last season.

This time around they are in rude health with a 2-0 Turf Moor win over Norwich making it eight points from the opening six games.

And Wood is also back in business after he struck both goals inside the opening quarter-of-an-hour to put the visitors to the sword.

“It was nice to get on the score sheet and even better to get the three points,” said the Clarets’ frontman, who has now scored in his last four games against the Canaries.

“It’s been a little time coming but it’s nice to be off the mark and rolling.

“I backed myself that they would come. I knew that it was hopefully only a matter of time.

“We just had to keep working hard as a team and thankfully they went in today.

“You want to get off the mark but as a striker you know the next chance is around the corner so you can’t get too dis-heartened or too down.

“You’ve just to make sure you’re ready for when they do fall so you can stick them in the back of the net.

“It was nice to get two goals up for the team and we never looked like conceding after that.”

Wood headed Burnley ahead after 10 minutes from Ashley Westwood’s perfectly delivered corner.

And the New Zealand international – who hit double figures in the top flight in his first two seasons at Turf Moor – then poached another when he confidently steered in a Dwight McNeil cross with his left instep.

The Clarets could have won more comfortably on Sean Dyche’s 313^th game in charge – lifting him to fourth on the all-time list of Burnley managers.

But Norwich – fresh from beating champions Manchester City a week ago – never really threatened the lead as Dyche’s men wrapped up a first win since the opening day with an accomplished display from back to front.

“That’s what comes of it if we are at our best – we get the three points,” added Wood.

“That’s what we try and strive to do every week and it’s nice to put in a great performance and get the three points out of it.

“We thrive on home games and try and work hard to get those wins. Thankfully we got another one today and now we can build on that and go forward.

“We knew we had a good four games (between international breaks) to hopefully get some points on the board and we’ve started pretty well.

“You can look it very happily, knowing that we can build on it and move forward and hopefully get some more results.”
