Wood bagged a hat-trick as Burnley brushed aside Nice 6-1 in their pre-season friendly at Turf Moor.

That followed a training-ground treble against Accrington Stanley earlier in a warm-up campaign that has seen the New Zealand international hit the target nine times.

And he hopes a first competitive hat-trick in a Burnley shirt will now follow at some point.

“Hopefully there’ll be a couple in the season,” said Wood, who has twice hit doubles in the Premier League in his two years as a Claret.

“That would be lovely, but ultimately we are just going to work hard as a team.

“We are doing that so far, so here’s to a good campaign.

“It’s just nice to be scoring goals and putting in performances like that as a team. It’s very pleasing.

“It’s nice they (the goals) are going in, but ultimately it is pre-season and we are getting our fitness and sharpness in the matches.

“We’re looking good and it’s good building up to the season because it’s only around the corner now.

“It shows that we’re on the right track, which is all it is at the moment.

“We’re on the right track and we need to keep going. We have a tough game on Saturday and then it starts all over again.

“It’s going to be tough – the first game always is – but we’re looking forward to it.”

Jeff Hendrick, Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Jay Rodriguez were also on the scoresheet as the Clarets over-powered the French Ligue 1 side.

Rodriguez came off the bench to score his first goal since his summer return and Wood admits the competition for places bodes well for the start of the Premier League campaign following Saturday’s final friendly at home to Serie A outfit Parma.

“It looks like we’ve got two players in each position and it’s a fight for places,” the striker told Clarets Player HD.

“Everybody is putting their hands up and it making it hard for the manager, which is a good thing for us.

“The boys that have come in – Jay and Erik (Pieters) – have done fantastically well and fitted in brilliantly, so they’re good additions so far.”
