U23 REPORT: Burnley 3 West Bromwich Albion 1

Steve Stone's side secured their second league victory in just seven days, with a 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion at the Tameside Stadium.

Lewis Richardson, fresh from making his Premier League debut on Sunday afternoon against Tottenham Hotspur, opened the scoring, before a goal from Joel Mumbongo two minutes later doubled the hosts' lead.

Swedish striker Mumbongo added his second and the Clarets' third in the second-half, before Baggies captain Owen Windsor pulled one back on the hour.

Josh Benson and Anthony Gomez Mancini were the central pairing in midfield, with Richard Nartey and Jake Rooney at centre-back and Max Thompson and Ne-jai Tucker on the flanks.

It was a quiet opening to the PL2 clash, on a sunny afternoon in Ashton-under-Lyne, as both sides looked to settle into the game.

But with 20 minutes on the clock, the Clarets opened the scoring through Richardson, as the young forward took advantage of Baggies goalkeeper Ted Cann's misplaced pass.

That gifted Richardson with a great opportunity and the teenager made no mistake to slot home and give the hosts the lead.

Just two minutes later the Clarets doubled their lead, as Max Thompson worked well out on the right, before getting a perfect cross in for Mumbongo, who turned home his excellent ball.

Stone's side were now cruising and could have added a third before the break, as a corner fell to Mumbongo inside the area, but his low driven strike was saved by the legs of Cann.

But just seven minutes into the second half, the Clarets had their third, after taking advantage of another West Brom defensive error.

This time Mumbongo picked up the loose ball and rounded the on-rushing Cann, before slotting in to an empty goal and wheeling away with his second of the afternoon.

Albion did pull a goal back on the hour mark, as skipper Windsor found the net from a tight angle, with calls of an offisde position from the Burnley defence being waved away.

With 66 minutes played, Richardson, Benson and Glennon all made way for Sam Unwin, Ben Woods and Matty Rain respectively.

Richter was then forced into action, with the German goalkeeper having to palm a fierce strike over the bar from a corner.

But despite late pressure from the visitors the Clarets stood strong, with the only blemish on an otherwise positive outcome being the stoppage time dismissal of Jake Rooney, who was shown a second yellow card for a late challenge.
