The Clarets’ defender is replaced for England's up-coming Nations League games against Croatia and Spain by Brighton’s Lewis Dunk.

Tarkowski recovered sufficiently from a groin problem which surfaced again in the Clarets’ Premier League win at Cardiff City a week ago to help Burnley earn a point from Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town.

But the centre-back, awarded the man-of-the-match award against the Terriers, is not 100 per cent.

And after withdrawing from the England squad, the 25-year-old will now undergo treatment and rehabilitation with Burnley during the international break.

Tarkowski told Clarets Player HD after the game against Huddersfield: “I’ve had a problem for quite a while now and we’re working hard to get things right. But it’s not as simple as just a week’s rest and everything’s fine.

“We’ve got to be at it all the time to get things right, which we are doing, and hopefully over the next few weeks we can get that right.”

Tarkowski, who had to pull out of England's stand-by squad ahead of the summer's World Cup Finals to undergo hernia surgery, won his second England cap in a friendly with Switzerland last month.
