The win placed the Clarets second in the table, along with joint leaders Birmingham City, with just goal difference separating the two sides.

And Stone was delighted to see his men put in a good performance to finish the year off with three points.

He said: “I’m really happy for the boys. I’ve only been here five or six weeks, so it’s their efforts that have got them joint top of the league.

“I think they are the ones that need to be commended. They’ve shown real strength and tenacity and to finish off where they have, with three different coaches this year, is a credit to them.

“We have great support staff around them who do the best they can, but they are the ones that have to go on the pitch and do it.

“Today, on a terrible pitch, they have played some good football as well as doing all the horrible, nasty things and winning the second balls.”

First-half strikes from Dwight McNeil and Dan Agyei saw the Clarets lead 2-1 at the break, before Agyei notched his second of the afternoon just after the hour mark to ensure the win.

And Stone was pleased to see another dominant attacking force on show again at Stocksbridge Park Steels.

The former Newcastle United coach said: “We actually put Rob (Harker) up there today to run the line and occupy both centre-halves.

"He’s a real physical presence up there at the minute, which allows Dan (Agyei) to pull off from the defenders and get on the diagonal balls and, of course, you have Tinashe (Chakwana) who is a real goal threat.

“Then Marley (Blair) came on and had a good performance. He’s hit the bar and had a few good runs at the defenders, so its all good at the moment and it’s nice to see.”
