The striker was forced to pull out of the England U17’s last week through a minor injury, but recovered in time to start alongside Rob Harker in the Clarets' front line at the DW Stadium.

And after superbly volleyingome Josh Benson’s early cross, Richardson admitted he was delighted to bag his first goal since the end of August as the Clarets stretched their unbeaten record this season to 11 games.

“It’s a great feeling to be scoring again. I think it’s my second league goal this season for the 23s," said Richardson.

“It’s amazing, I had lots of friends and family here watching and supporting me as well.

“This is what I love doing at the end of the day, scoring for the 23’s and under the lights at a Championship stadium, in front of a decent crowd as well just tops it off.

“I’m only 16 so it really just amazing, I just want to push on now and hopefully get a few more to my name.”

The Clarets had the chance to regain the lead in the 57^th minute when Richardson was brought down inside the area.

But Harker saw his spot-kick saved by Wigan goalkeeper Daniel Gyollai from the fourth penalty Richardson has won his side this season.

“I think it’s definitely time for me to start thinking about taking penalties,” Richardson laughed.

“I have won a fair few this season so far, so it’s something I might work on in training.”

The Clarets climbed up to second spot in the U23 Professional Development League, although lost more ground on leaders Nottingham Forest thanks to a sixth draw in nine league games.

Steve Stone's side also drew their opening Premier League Cup group game at Middlesbrough earlier this month - with Richardson revealing a knock in that game had cost him the chance to add to his England caps.

“In the Middlesbrough game the day before (meeting up with the squad) , I tweaked my hamstring a little bit," he explained.

“I didn’t think it was anything major at first and I carried on the game, but it just got worse and worse throughout the game.

“Then after the match, I sat down with the physio and being honest there was no chance I could have gone really."
