Hendrick claimed the Clarets’ goal of the season two years ago with the decisive effort at Goodison Park.

And the in-form midfielder repeated the trick as he struck with another classy finish to propel Burnley into fifth place in the table on the back of a four-match unbeaten run and back-to-back Turf Moor wins.

These two sides had never drawn a Premier League game before in 10 previous meetings.

And after Everton captain Seamus Coleman had been sent off for a second bookable offence 11 minutes into the second half, Sean Dyche’s men made sure it would stay that way to extend their excellent start to the season.

The Toffees didn’t make it easy as they tried to halt their slide in the opposite direction.

But Hendrick proved the difference as he underlined the Clarets’ growing belief by volleying home his second big goal in four games to put Burnley back among the big boys.

As anticipated, Jack Cork missed only his second Premier League game as a Claret as a result of the fractured shoulder blade he suffered at Aston Villa.

A re-call for Johann Berg Gudmundsson meant a continuation of the 4-4-2 formation – rather than the line-up that had finished the 2-2 draw at Villa Park – as Hendrick tucked inside to fill Cork’s role.

And it was Gudmundsson who had the Clarets’ only effort on target in a tame first half.

The Icelander climbed well to meet a deep cross from Erik Pieters – who ended the half limping following a high tackle from Coleman that brought the Irishman a yellow card – but at full stretch couldn’t find the power to beat Jordan Pickford.

The only other concern for the England international had come when Hendrick arrived late to fire an Ashley Westwood corner back towards goal with Pickford alert to clear the danger with his legs as the Clarets enjoyed their best spell of the opening 45 minutes.

At the other end, Nick Pope – named alongside Pickford and ex-Claret Tom Heaton in the England squad for their Euro 2022 qualifying double-header – had little to do either.

Everton, looking to arrest a run of three successive league defeats, did carry a threat – notably from set-pieces which had also been their most potent weapon when they won 5-1 at Turf Moor on Boxing Day.

Dwight McNeil had to clear one effort off the line, which came off team-mate Matt Lowton who knew more about one superb block to deny Alex Iwobi what looked like the opening goal five minutes before the break.

Pieters started the second half but lasted less than 10 minutes as he finally succumbed to the injury sustained in the challenge by Coleman.

The Everton full-back showed his concern as the sides came back out but moments after Pieters had been replaced by Charlie Taylor for his first Premier League appearance of the season, Coleman then leapt late into Dwight McNeil and saw yellow for the second time to get his marching orders.

From the free-kick that followed, Ashley Barnes volleyed just wide from James Tarkowski’s knock-down but the Clarets were unable to make the extra man count as Everton sat in with two banks of four and looked to play on the break.

But Burnley kept plugging away and their persistence finally paid off with 72 minutes gone.

Taylor’s forward burst won a corner and when Westwood again delivered beyond the far post, Hendrick timed his run to perfection to volley into the roof of the net.

Hendrick was then involved again as the Clarets could have doubled their lead, steering the ball into the path of substitute Jay Rodriguez who couldn’t beat Pickford as he slid in to shoot.

Gudmundsson then shot over after being superbly picked out by Taylor at the end of another typically barnstorming run.

And even though a second goal wouldn’t come and the Clarets had to see out six minutes of stoppage time, a superb defence performance wrapped around the titanic centre-back pairing of Tarkowski and Ben Mee ensured no alarms as a second successive home clean sheet made it job done.
