A first half goal from Callum Wilson handed Newcastle United all three points and a first defeat in five Premier League matches for Burnley.
The Clarets created opportunities at St James’ Park, and had a goal ruled out for offside, but it was the North East side that claimed the win.
Burnley made two changes from the draw at Wolves, with James Tarkowski and Ashley Westwood returning to the starting line up, in place of the injured Ben Mee and Jack Cork, the latter dropping to the bench. Meanwhile, the hosts named former Claret, Jeff Hendrick, on the bench.
The first opportunity of the match fell the way of the visitors when Maxwel Cornet got on the end of a Chris Wood flick on, bearing down on goal, our number 20 struck wide.
A second chance soon followed for Sean Dyche’s side, as Johann Berg Gudmundsson carried the ball from his own half to the edge of the Newcastle penalty area, but Dwight McNeil couldn’t direct a header on target.
Burnley were the team applying the early pressure as Gudmundsson forced a strong palm from Martin Dubravka just before the quarter hour mark, after we snatched possession from the home side inside their own half.
Cornet again came close in the 20th minute with a low header from McNeil’s left-wing cross, but an acrobatic save courtesy of Dubravka denied the Ivory Coast international the opener.
A superb block from Charlie Taylor denied Wilson a glorious opportunity to open the scoring at St James’ Park.
Burnley were forced into their first change in the 31st minute as Cornet was forced off through injury, Matej Vydra the man to come on.
However, despite Burnley being the team on the front foot, Newcastle went ahead in the 40th minute when Wilson put the ball into the roof of the net.
Burnley could have equalised in first half stoppage time when Matt Lowton picked out Vydra with a switched pass from the right hand side, but the sub didn’t connect with his shot and the ball flew over the bar.
With work to do in the second half, Burnley didn’t let the late first half goal from the hosts dishearten them, as they looked for a way back into the game in the North East.
A fine stop from Nick Pope denied Miguel Almiron a second goal for Toon, palming a shot wide for a corner kick with ten minutes of the second period played.
Burnley’s first shot of the second half came courtesy of Gudmundsson’s 30-yard free-kick, but our number seven couldn’t find the target to test the goalkeeper.
In the 74th minute, Connor Roberts came on for the Clarets, taking the place of Lowton. Newcastle began to grow in confidence, putting pressure on the Burnley backline, but the defence was putting in a number of vital blocks.
Pope was called into action with ten minutes remaining, pushing over Jonjo Shelvey’s curling shot, which was destined to nestle into the top corner.
The Clarets final change saw Gudmundsson come off for Jay Rodriguez as Burnley looked for an equalising goal at St James’ Park.
Burnley had a late chance through a Tarkowski header and Vydra had a goal chalked off for offside, but Newcastle held on for the win.
