Some sources have Barnes down as having just 99 career goals to his name.

But Oxford United’s club historian Martin Brodestky kindly got in touch following Barnes’ match-winning contribution against Southampton to flag up a ‘mystery’ goal.

Barnes has not always been credited with scoring for Oxford in their 2-0 win at Kidderminster Harriers in the National League during a loan spell in 2007.

But with that taken into account, Barnes clocked up the 99^th and 100^th senior goals of his career with his second-half brace against the Saints at Turf Moor.

Of those, 39 have come with the Clarets, including 34 in the Premier League as Burnley’s leading scorer in the competition.

“He knows the game,” said Burnley boss Sean Dyche, who signed Barnes from Brighton in January, 2014.

“He’s learned for many years when you think of his history. He’s played at Paulton Rovers and the like in the lower leagues. He’s learned the way the game works.

“He’s learned the different ways you can be effective. Everyone wants beautiful football with great touches and great awareness.

“And he can do that. He’s a better player than most people think, but he can also make it awkward and make it hard for defenders.

“He’s mentally tough and his two finishes were sublime.”
