Steve Stone’s side came through a tough group including Category One sides Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion, who both missed out as Burnley and Bournemouth qualified for the knock-out stages.

And the Clarets had to do it the hard way by recovering from a 7-1 beating by Bournemouth in their opening Group C game before beating West Brom 1-0 in a winner-takes all decider to snatch top spot and a home tie in the next round.

“It’s a great feeling, especially after a tough start at Bournemouth,” said Glennon, who has led by example as skipper.

“That was a big defeat and it was tough. But I think since Steve has come in, he has given us confidence and he has said to us before every game ‘go and do it for yourselves’.

“I think the lads have taken to that and done excellent to bounce back. I think we deserved to go through in the end.

“We didn’t have much of the ball against West Brom and it was a different game-plan and style of play, but I thought the lads took it really well and it’s good to go through.”

Dan Agyei’s early goal against the Baggies was enough to take the Clarets through as they then nullified the visitors threat to keep a second successive clean sheet in the competition and extend their unbeaten record in league and cup to six games.

Glennon, who joined the Clarets last year after leaving home-town club Liverpool, has emerged as key player in the U23 set-up either at centre-back or left-back.

And the 19-year-old is enjoying a season that is seeing the Clarets challenge on several fronts with the identity of their last-16 opponents in the PL Cup to be confirmed on Monday afternoon.

“It will be another tough next, I’m sure, but since Steve has come in we’ve got to the final of the Lancashire Cup, we’re up there in the league and now we’re through in this,” Glennon added.

“If you’d said that at the start of the season, you’d probably have said that was a bit of a long shot, but the lads have been excellent.

“Even in training we’ve worked hard. It’s a good group of lads, everyone gets on and I think we deserve everything we’ve got. It could be a big end of the season.”
