The Clarets’ defender is recovering from a hernia operation he underwent last month.

And if things continue to progress smoothly he may be pencilled in for a run-out in the under-23s to aid his return to full fitness.

Boss Sean Dyche confirmed: “He’s going well. He’s not too far away and I would expect, everything going as it is, by the end of the international window we might even get him into a reserve game, which would be good for him.

“So far it’s looking promising."

Gibson made two appearances in the Europa League in August but is yet to figure in the Premier League for the Clarets since his summer signing from Middlesbrough.

Meanwhile, Robbie Brady’s return has been put on hold following a slight setback which ruled the winger out of a second appearance with the under-23s in the Professional Development League last Monday and kept him out of contention for a place in the Republic of Ireland squad for their two fixtures over the next fortnight.

“He’s missed a few days,” Dyche added. “He’s got a niggly hamstring. It’s often the case when you’ve had a long-term injury.

“You pick up niggles; nothing too serious, but it’s four days here, five days there. And there have been a few weeks of that.

“We’re hoping this international break he gets back to a clean bill of health and day-after-day training.

“It’s nothing major and we’re hoping this international break will get him back to where we want him to be.”

Elsewhere, Belgian midfielder Steven Defour is a doubt for the weekend clash with Huddersfield, through a personal issue.

Dyche explained: "Steven is good and we'll see how he is at the weekend. He's got a personal situation he is attending to, so we'll leave him to that for now."
