Dyche’s men were unable to snap their eight-game winless run as the visitors hit back from Jack Cork’s opening goal to secure a 3-1 win at Turf Moor.

But the title-chasing Reds were pushed all the way as Burnley bounced back from a dismal defeat at Crystal Palace to produce one of their best performances of the campaign.

And Dyche wants that to be the blueprint going forward as his side tries to battle their way out of a relegation fight.

“Although we didn’t get a result, there were clear signs of an improvement in the performance, both individually and collectively. I referenced it to the players last night,” said the Burnley boss, who made five changes to his starting line-up.

“I said if that’s a benchmark of a performance, then we’ve got to at least maintain that and find consistency and then add to that with bits of quality and key moments.

“But as a new benchmark – and we’ve had several this season and dropped away from it too quickly – that is certainly a sign of a team performing at the right level.”

The Clarets face a quick turn-around before facing mid-table Brighton back at Turf Moor on Saturday.

And Dyche hopes a repeat of the atmosphere the supporters generated against Liverpool will help trigger a return to winning ways.

“We have to put in performances like last night and add in the detail in both boxes to make sure we get results,” he added.

“We know it’s another tough game, particularly when we’re having a tough time. But we’ve bounced out of these times before.

“If the crowd continue backing the side like they did the other night, that’s another weapon.

“They were absolutely magnificent and that’s going to be important going forward.

“There’s a lot for us to build on against Brighton on Saturday.”

Midfielder Steven Defour will again have his fitness assessed before the weekend but everyone on duty against Liverpool came through unscathed to be ready to go again.
