And while the results were contrasting – both are seen as landmark games in the club’s history.

In 1988, Brian Miller’s side was beaten 2-0 by Wolverhampton Wanderers in the final of the Sherpa Vans Trophy.

There was no silverware to bring back to Turf Moor, but a year on from the ‘Orient’ game and the fear of footballing oblivion, the trip to Wembley and the backing of an army of Burnley fans in a crowd of 80,841 was an important step in the re-birth of the club.

Twenty-five years ago today, the Clarets were back at Wembley and, this time, they were victorious.

Jimmy Mullen’s side had finished sixth in the third tier to qualify for the 1993/94 promotion play-offs.

Victory over Plymouth Argyle in the semi-finals set up a winners-takes-all clash with local rivals Stockport County under the Twin Towers.

And it was the Clarets who came out on top as close to 40,000 Burnley fans in a crowd of 44,806 celebrated goals from great pals David Eyres and Gary Parkinson in a famous 2-1 win which lifted the Clarets back to Championship level for the first time in 11 years.
