And the new signing is looking forward to building on his flying start by further aiding Burnley’s bid to preserve their Premier League status.

The Clarets were staring at a first league defeat since Boxing Day after being controversially denied a penalty when Ashley Barnes was floored by Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and Nathan Redmond fired the visitors ahead at Turf Moor on Saturday.

But Crouch came off the bench to help spark a late Burnley fightback, his stoppage-time header hitting the raised arm of Saints’ defender Jack Stephens and allowing Barnes to calmly slot home the Clarets’ first penalty in 68 Premier League games to secure a 1-1 draw and make it six games without defeat.

“At home you always expect to win games and having gone a goal behind and it being so late as well, it feels like a really good point,” said Crouch, who joined the Clarets from Stoke City on transfer deadline day.

“Coming off the bench, the biggest impact is scoring a goal. But I’ve been involved in the penalty.

“I know I can still make an impact at this level. That’s what I’ve been brought here to do.

“Thankfully it’s gone for us and we managed to get a point and hopefully there’s a few more and a few goals to come.”

At 38, Crouch brings a wealth of proven Premier League pedigree and a background of 42 England caps to Turf Moor for the end-of-season run-in.

And he is excited at the prospect of adding to his top-flight goal tally of 108, convinced that he will be provided with the ammunition to contribute to the Clarets’ climb away from danger.

“There’s a great bunch of lads and a great quality. I saw that in my first day,” added Crouch, who looks to have made a smooth transition into Sean Dyche’s squad and who was warmly welcomed by the Clarets' fans.

“People talk about the determination and the team spirit here, but you need good players as well and I think we’ve got that here.

“I knew it was a good dressing room and I knew there were players who like to get the ball in early and play into the strikers.

“I remember watching Burnley in previous years and playing against them and looking on a bit enviously at the centre-forwards because they do get crosses in and they do get balls into the strikers, and that’s what I thrive on.

“Hopefully I will get a few chances and make them count.”
