Burnley go into the Boxing Day visit of mid-table Everton in the Premier League’s relegation places.

But with three of their next four games at home - with West Ham and bottom club Fulham due to follow the visit of the Toffees in the Premier League - Cork is upbeat about the Clarets’ prospects of playing their way out of trouble.

“We’ve played Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal in three of the last four games and in all of them we’ve put in a good performance and nearly got something from them,” said the midfield man.

“We’ve got a lot to be optimistic about and we’re looking forward to Christmas and the New Year. We’ve got a good run of games coming up.

“It’s Everton and West Ham next and it’s great for us to be at home.

“To go back to Turf and be in front of our home crowd is difficult for anyone coming here.”

Sean Dyche’s men won their last home game – a 1-0 success over Brighton.

But they haven’t been unable to build on that, with a last-gasp 1-0 defeat at Tottenham followed by another reverse in North London as Arsenal survived a second-half fightback to secure a 3-1 win with break-away goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and substitute Alex Iwobi either side of an Ashley Barnes strike.

“We created a few chances and were on top of them for the majority of the second half,” added Cork, who had an opportunity himself to make it 2-2.

“We could have got a couple of goals if we had been a little bit calmer in attack.

“But you know the quality of Arsenal on the counter and when it opens up like that they are some of the best in the world in one-against-one situations.”
