Burnley Football Club are pleased to team up with Event Cup Solutions to reduce the amount of single use plastics used at Turf Moor stadium.
The Club has been open in its desire to operate in a more sustainable manner and reduce its environmental impact, having introduced several activities over the course of the past year including installing LED lights, water use reduction strategies and the establishment by fans of @SustainClarets, the ‘Sustainable Burnley FC’ supporters’ group. The Event Cup Solutions scheme will remove around 150,000 single use plastic cups from the Club’s waste every season, with similar schemes rolled out at both Everton and Aston Villa, as football clubs aim to do more to tackle plastic waste.
The scheme will be introduced for the first time at the Burnley v Southampton game on Thursday 21st April with fans encouraged, rather than throwing their used drink cup into the regular concourse and FanZone bins, instead are being asked to leave their used cup on a shelf, bar, or other suitable areas, or to place it into one of the branded cup collection bins that will be situated close to the concourse bars and in the FanZone. From here, it will be collected, washed, and re-used.
Sustainability was the recent topic in the latest fan feedback Clarets View survey, with feedback from Clarets fans suggesting many would like to see Burnley FC behave in a more sustainable manner. 81% of those surveyed said they would like to see the Club reduce single use plastic, while 87% wished for an improvement in recycling and waste production. Matt Hargreaves, Facilities Manager at Burnley FC said: “Sustainability is a key area for us and our fans, as awareness of the impact we are making on the planet continues to grow. This was demonstrated through the feedback from the recent Clarets View survey, football clubs have a responsibility to be aware of the environment and it’s important that we play our part.
“Now is the time to act and it’s through initiatives such as this, that we can be more environmentally sustainable. It’s a step in the right direction as we aim to improve and minimise our environmental impact.
“We encourage supporters to help us in our mission as together we can make a positive difference”.
