Cardiff are looking for a first win of the season after regaining top-flight status for only the second time in 56 years by finishing as Championship runners-up last season.

And Burnley are seeking a first win at the Cardiff City Stadium after five fruitless attempts since the Bluebirds re-located there in 2009.

However, only one of those trips ended in a league defeat – a 4-0 loss in October, 2012 in the week before Sean Dyche took over as Burnley manager.

Since then, all three Championship meetings have finished all square, including a 2-2 draw in November, 2015 when the Clarets came back from 2-0 down to take a point on their way to the title.

Ben Mee is likely to be the only member of the Clarets’ starting line-up that day to start again on Sunday.

Mee will lead out a side looking to back up last Saturday’s impressive 4-0 win over Bournemouth, which gave the Clarets their first three-pointer and lifted them above Cardiff and out of the bottom three.

Only Huddersfield now keep Cardiff off bottom spot thanks to alphabetical order – both sides having scored three goals and conceded 14 times.

But Dyche knows his side is not in for an easy ride as he prepares for another fight for the points.

The Burnley boss said: “They’ve had a tough start, partly because of the realities of their fixtures, partly because it’s tough in the Premier League.

“We’ve been through that ourselves and been through that before in this division.

“The main thing for me is to focus on what we do and the clear focus of how we perform. And I thought that was very pleasing last week to get a result.

“We have to earn the right again. There are no ‘gimmes’ and no easy games.

“Every game in the Premier League is a must-win, every game is a big game and every game you have to give everything to win, or certainly when you’re Burnley or a number of other clubs in the Premier League.”

Team news

The Clarets welcomed back midfielder Steven Defour in mid-week and he could be involved in a Premier League squad for the first time since 20 January.

Robbie Brady is edging nearer a return but is a week away from being in first-team contention.

Cardiff winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing remains sidelined, while defender Lee Peltier is out after suffering a dislocated shoulder last weekend’s loss to Manchester City.

Fit-again summer signing Josh Murphy and defender Sol Bamba could start, but midfielder Aaron Gunnarsson is a doubt and so may miss out an Icelandic showdown with Clarets winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson.

While the Clarets recorded their first league win last weekend, the Bluebirds are still without a victory in the Premier League since returning to the top-flight this season.

Neil Warnock’s side drew two of their first three games but have lost three on the spin since then – albeit against heavyweight opposition in the shape of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.

They are the joint lowest scoring side in the division, along with bottom club Huddersfield Town, with three goals each.

Opposition camp

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock has the experience not to panic after a testing start.

But having just played three of the division's big guns and Tottenham and Liverpool providing two of the Bluebirds' next three opponents, Warnock sees the visit of the Clarets as a key game in the search for a first win.

He said: “The fixture list hasn’t been too kind to us. In the first 10 games we're playing nearly all of the top seven from last year. It is a little bit cruel, but we’ve got to hang in there.

“I always believe, apart from that top six, everything is winnable in this league - and Burnley are in that category.

“We know that Sean has got a really good work ethic, but we have to be ready for what’s coming, and hopefully we can cause them problems.

“It isn’t must-win, but it’s a game that’s really important to us, with the fixtures coming up."

Warnock, whose promotion with Cardiff last season was a record-breaking eighth as a manager, added: “Winning your first game is always important.

"That’s why I’m disappointed so early on that we didn’t take our opportunities when we did have them. But then you’ve just got to stop feeling sorry for yourselves and get on with it.

“I can’t fault the lads. They’re trying as hard as they can. They’ve just got to eliminate the mistakes really and we need to make more of a game of it for the 90 minutes.

"That's what we need to do - get the home crowd going too, and give them something to shout about."

Sunday’s game will be the first top-flight meeting between the two sides since March, 1962. Brian Miller scored for the Clarets in a 1-1 draw at Ninian Park.

Nine of the last 11 league games between the two sides have ended in draws.

The Clarets haven't beaten Cardiff in the last 13 games in all competitions.
