The striker made it three goals in two games for the under-23s after scoring in a 2-1 Professional Development League defeat to Millwall at Monday.

And after seeing a point taken away by a late goal against the Lions – having let leads slip in previous league defeats at Coventry City and QPR – Chakwana was happy to get the job done against a youthful Barrow side.

“It was a different kind of test, but it was good to get a win to get into the next round,” said the 19-year-old (above), who signed a first professional contract at Turf Moor during the summer.

“Also, after dropping points in the last game it was good to make amends.

“Again today we were 2-0 up. In the last few games in the second half we’ve dropped off, but we stayed on it today and we’re trying to make sure we keep our standards up and if we get in front we stay in front and kill teams off.”

The win, book-ended by goals from Dan Agyei and substitute Kai Smith, was overseen by Academy Manager Jon Pepper, who is leading the under-23s pending the appointment of a replacement for Michael Duff.

And Chakwana admitted Duff’s departure to take over as Cheltenham Town’s new manager has left a big void to fill following his work with the youth and development squads over the past two seasons.

“I’ve had him since I was 16 or 17. He has done well with us and the opportunity came calling and was probably one he couldn’t turn down,” he added.

“I just wish him all the best. We’re waiting to see who comes in but whoever it is will find a good bunch of lads and hopefully will enjoy working with us.”

Whoever takes charge will hopefully have a run in the county cup to fit into the itinerary after the Clarets became the second side through to the quarter-finals following Blackburn Rovers’ walkover against Preston.

Burnley’s progress was never really in any doubt after two goals inside the opening 15 minutes against the National League side at the Barnfield Training Centre.

Agyei fired home the first with a strike from just inside the penalty area and, having had a hand in the opener, winger Tundi Bayode (below) then also set up the second goal.

Bayode’s ball over the top released Chakwana, who finished well to beat Barrow keeper Joel Dixon, whose sweeper-keeper role proved effective for the rest of the half and who also made a decent block to deny Chakwana a second from Bayode’s pull-back.

Barrow, managed by former Blackpool and QPR centre-back Ian Evatt, didn’t have many senior players on show just two days before a league game at Boreham Wood, although former Tranmere captain Steve Jennings patrolled the middle of midfield and at the back, West Bromwich Albion loanee Kyle Jameson hinted at his pedigree.

Former Leicester City and Motherwell striker Jacob Blyth was also given a run-out on his return from injury and did force Clarets keeper Adam Bruce into one top-notch save before the break with a header which was destined for the top corner.

The best chances came Burnley’s way, though, as Agyei volleyed wide from an opportunity to make it 3-0 nine minutes into the second half before his replacement Ali Koiki shot straight at Dixon from another opening.

And two goals in the last 20 minutes finally completed the Clarets’ comfortable passage, Chakwana coolly slotting home again from Christian N’Guessan’s fine pass before youth-teamer Smith made his mark with an assured finish after a mis-cued back-pass gave him a late sight of goal he didn’t pass up.
