BLACK HISTORY MONTH: MORE THAN JUST A MONTH
We kickstart a programme of Black History Month initiatives for the 2021/22 season
October marks Black History Month (BHM) in the UK, whereby the club will work alongside the Premier League to celebrate this year’s theme: Proud to Be.
Diversity on and off the pitch has been a huge part of the Premier League story over its 30 seasons, which also runs through the rich heritage and history of the club. We are proud to acknowledge, support and celebrate this.
The contribution that players of African and Caribbean descent have made to league, and more specifically to the club, will be marked across our digital channels.
We kick this off with a goal compilation video commemorating iconic players that donned the famous claret and blue shirt.
Although the UK focus of October is celebrating Black History Month, we want to stress that this is more than just a month - it is the club’s intention to combine BHM initiatives more broadly across the 2021/22 Premier League season.
Today, fans at Turf Moor will hear the Players’ Playlist Part 1; a selection of black British artists and music from different genres handpicked by the Burnley FC Women, which will be played alongside our Premier League playlist. Part 2 will be played at Turf Moor on the day of our Brentford game on Saturday 30th October - songs from this playlist will have been selected by the men’s first team.
Music is a universal language and the Clarets' ethos is ‘One Club for All’, so we see the Players’ Playlist as a way of opening the celebration to a broader range of people than intended. There is space for many of us to join in acknowledging and celebrating the work, lives, experiences, and achievements of black heritage.
The club have also planned a series of guest speaker workshops with the academy players and staff focussing on the importance of positive leaders and role models, allyship and gender and race in football.
Burnley FC in the Community is also delivering schools ‘DIG DEEPER, LOOK CLOSER, THINK BIGGER’ workshops, focussing on representation in football and famous figures.
We will keep you updated throughout the month and beyond of our activity for Black History Month.
