Sean Dyche’s men are still five points clear of the relegation places thanks to the benefits of the eight-match unbeaten run they put together from Christmas.

But after following their mid-week defeat at Newcastle United with a 3-1 home loss to Crystal Palace, Bardsley wants to re-wind the clock.

“It was a disappointing result on Tuesday night and today,” admitted the defender.

“But before that we built some momentum and put in some good performances and it’s up to us now to get back to them and perform to those standards.”

Bardsley was powerless to divert a Jeffrey Schlupp cross into his own net to hand Palace a half-time lead.

The right-back then did his best to make amends with a stream of teasing crosses into the Palace penalty area as Burnley looked to hit back.k

But the Clarets couldn’t make their pressure pay off and after being struc by a double blow from Michy Batshuayi – who netted three minutes after the break – and Wilfried Zaha, the in-form Londoners had enough in hand to survive Ashley Barnes’ late goal and secure their sixth away win of the season.

“I thought in the first half we were the better team and we were unfortunate to concede an own goal, which there isn’t much you can do about,” added Bardsley.

“It’s the way it goes. When you’re running back towards your own goal in those sort of situations and a cross fizzes across the goal you just try and do your best to try and clear it.

“Unfortunately, it’s just hit me and gone in.

“In the second half they hit us on the break a couple of times and put the game to bed.

“They have some good players, especially on the counter-attack, and we gave possession away easily and they went on to score a couple of goals from that, which is disappointing on our behalf.”
