An over-night 2-1 defeat in Arizona ended Canada’s hopes of repeating their 2000 success in the biennial tournament.

But Arfield – an ever-present in the Cannucks’ run to the last eight – believes there is plenty to be positive about for the country’s footballing fortunes.

The Clarets’ winger said: “I know how far we have come, and we felt we could’ve gone all the way and gone on to win the competition.

“I think we have changed the mentality and the manager has done so well in four games to help with that.

“Now we have two years to prepare for the next Gold Cup, so you can only imagine how good we can be within two years’ time.

“We created so many chances, and on another day we would have won this game so very comfortably.”

Canada trailed 2-0 to Jamaica early in the second half before a superb strike from Cardiff City winger Junior Hoilett set up hopes of a successful comeback.

Arfield - who enjoyed a 91% pass completion rate and had two shots on target as he won his 11^th cap – added: “The timing of the Jamaican goals killed us, but that was one of our best performances in terms of dominating the ball, and we showed great character after their second.

“We knew our goal would come and we thought we could always get that equaliser, but it just wasn’t to be.”
