Blake Expects Reserve-Team Reaction

Posted on: Sat 10 Mar 2012

Development coach Jason Blake admits he will be looking for better next week when the Clarets' Reserves bid to get their Central League title push back on track.

Burnley face Wrexham at Turf Moor next Tuesday night on the back of a 3-2 defeat to Oldham.

Danny Ings and Zavon Hines were both on target in a late fightback but conceding three goals in a poor first-half performance proved costly as the second string was beaten for only the second time this season to stay second in the table.

"We gave ourselves a lot to do in the second half," admitted Blake (right).

"We let ourselves down on a few of the basic fundamentals of the game and we are better than that. That's the most disappointing thing.

"But we saw a reaction in the second half and we have a game next week which gives us a quick opportunity to put it right.

"It's disappointing, but we have to reflect and make sure we don't let it happen again."

The Clarets started with seven senior players in their starting line-up against the West Division's bottom club but still found themselves 3-0 down after little more than half an hour.

"It was frustrating; set-piece, set-piece and the third goal was a little bit of sloppiness defensively in wide areas," Blake added.

"We didn't keep the ball as well as we are capable of with the players who were on the pitch.

"Our work ethic defensively at times was questionable, which is not acceptable.

"They showed that they wanted it more than us, to win the game and to compete for every ball and so we came in with what we deserved at half time.

"It was quite an open dressing room at half time and an honest one and in the second half we came out and committed to keeping the ball better and to work harder out of possession and I think the second half showed that they tried to do that."

The Clarets dominated after the break and even though they couldn't rescue a point there were plus-points to come from the night as a number of Eddie Howe's first-team squad benefitted from a run-out and three members of the youth team made a positive contribution.

"The positives to come out of it are that you can make a contribution in the second half and you look at some of the players that got some vital game-time," said Blake.

Cameron Howieson

"Danny Ings got 90 minutes, Pato got 65, Marv got 75 in the end, which is vital for them, Danny Lafferty played another game and a couple of the young lads came in.

"It was great to see Cammy Howieson come and get a little bit more game time.

"Stevie Hewitt and Shay McCartan have been around it for a little bit now but Cammy has come in and looked very assured in possession when he came on.

"And you also have to comment on the quality of our goals. It was a great piece of skill from Danny Ings and a good run with the ball and finish from Zavon Hines.

"We had a few chances in the second half but unfortunately we didn't really work the keeper. Everything we hit ended up going towards him.

"I was pleased that we got the chances but the bottom line is you have to make the keeper work."
