BURNLEY RES 3 ACCRINGTON RES 1

Posted on: Wed 08 Sep 2010

Michael Duff successfully came through his comeback from injury as the Clarets' reserves continued their winning start in the totesport.com league at Turf Moor.

Duff played a full 90 minutes as Burnley beat off a determined challenge from neighbours Accrington thanks to two goals from Jay Rodriguez and a first strike from Michael King since he joined the professional ranks in the summer.

Rodriguez scores his second

It was Duff's first taste of action since limping off on the opening day of the season with a calf injury as he put himself in the frame for a place in the squad to face Preston on Saturday.

And the defender, who wore the captain's armband, was certainly given a decent work-out before the Clarets finally secured the points with two goals inside a quarter of an hour in the second half.

A strong Burnley side had been looking at an easier night when they went ahead after just eight minutes when King delivered a corner for Rodriguez to power home a firm header.

King was then crowded out as he looked to convert a knock-down from Wes Fletcher following a deep cross from the industrious Alex MacDonald.

But the Clarets didn't build on their flying start as Stanley grabbed a foothold in the game and just before the break they had a chance to level through Rory Boulding, who fired over.

Eckersley in action

However, it was a warning Burnley didn't heed and six minutes into the second half the visitors equalised through Luke Joyce, who powered a 25-yarder past Lee Grant.

Duff's only slip of the night then almost let in Alan Burton but Richard Eckersley came to the rescue with an excellent covering tackle.

And three minutes later, with almost an hour gone, the Clarets regained the lead.

Kevin McDonald and Alex-Ray Harvey launched the decisive break and when Harvey released Rodriguez, the striker surged clear and beat Alex Cisak with a calm finish.

With the Clarets on top Fletcher fired just over and King then enjoyed his big moment 19 minutes from time.

The midfielder has made a major impression since signing as a professional in the summer and he pounced to drill home a left foot shot from ten yards following a scintillating run from Brian Easton.

First goal for Michael King

Richard Eckersley was denied a fourth goal as Cisak made a smart save after the full-back had played a neat one-two with McDonald but the Clarets had done enough to make it two wins from two and a successful homecoming to Turf Moor for the second string.
