Eagles Agrees New Deal

Posted on: Wed 25 Aug 2010

Chris Eagles tonight handed the Clarets a major boost by agreeing to sign a new two-year deal at Turf Moor.

Eagles has killed off speculation of a move away from the club by committing himself to a new contract running until June, 2012.

Delighted Burnley boss Brian Laws confirmed: "Chris has agreed to sign a new two-year deal and is going to stay with us.

"That's great news for the fans and the football club because quite clearly he has the talent.

"He is taking on board what we are asking of him and he showed tonight in glimpses what he will produce for the rest of the season."

Laws added: "It's really pleasing that he has committed himself to the club. It quashes any rumours about Celtic or Rangers. He wants to stay at Burnley and that's good enough for us.

"I'm hoping that it will give everyone a lift. It shows there is good harmony here and good competition and tonight showed that."

Eagles scored one goal and made another to inspire Burnley to a 3-1 Carling Cup win at Morecambe and a place in the third round of the competition.

And as well as looking forward to a place in next Saturday's draw, Laws knows he can now continue to plan a Championship promotion challenge with Eagles as a key part of his squad.

The former Manchester United winger, 24, was given permission to speak to Rangers about a possible move to the Scottish Premier League champions earlier this summer as he entered the final 12 months of his existing contract.

But his decision to commit his immediate future to the Clarets means Burnley can now move forward knowing that they have one of their major assets in place for a crack at a return to the Premier League.
