Grant Is Ready To Stake A Claim

Posted on: Tue 24 Aug 2010

New signing Lee Grant is relishing the prospect of a second Clarets' debut as he bids to keep pushing Brian Jensen for his first-team jersey.

Grant is set to start for Burnley in tonight's Carling Cup second-round clash at Morecambe as boss Brian Laws rings the changes from his Championship line-up.

His call-up will come almost five years since he played the solitary game of a loan spell from Derby County.

And the 27-year-old goalkeeper is looking forward to stepping up from the substitute's role he has filled at Turf Moor since signing from Sheffield Wednesday before the start of the season.

"Patience is a virtue and I am working very hard to impress, so when I do get the nod from the gaffer I will grab it with both hands," said Grant.

"I was well aware of the situation when I signed that I wasn't guaranteed the number one shirt. Nothing has changed but it's a case of knuckling down and trying hard to impress the manager.

"The aim is to get a run-out and try to see if I can give the manager a headache for the league games.

Lee Grant wants a first-team shirt

"You come in daily and work hard to make sure you are ready. There's a game on Tuesday night so I will prepare as if I'm playing, the same as there was a game on Saturday and I prepared on Friday and Saturday morning as if I was playing. You have to be ready to play all the time."

With Jensen signing a new two-year deal in the summer and starting the campaign with two clean sheets from his first three games, the great Dane has carried on as first-choice between the posts.

And Grant admits it's a fair fight between two respected rivals.

"It's been well documented it's going to be a tough battle for the pair of us," added the former England under-21 international.

"The competition is going to be tough between me and Brian and it's my job on Tuesday night to try increase the pressure on Brian.

A first taste of the Clarets

"But in terms of work on a day-to-day basis it's been great and we have been supporting each other.

"Regardless of who's playing I will give Brian my support and I would expect nothing less from Brian if I was playing. It's good competition and it's all healthy for the club."

Despite his personal frustration, Grant has been delighted with the Clarets' unbeaten start to the campaign.

And he hopes that he can play his part in avoiding a slip-up at League Two Morecambe - conquerors of Coventry City in round one - and launching a successful cup run to go hand-in-hand with a promotion challenge.

"The cup has been awful for me in the past but I'm at a new club now and we have a good tradition of having successful runs. Hopefully Tuesday night will be the start of another run," Grant said.

Brian Jensen is keeping a tight grip on his starting spot

"Morecambe will be more than up for this game, and they will know what it is like to face a team from a higher division as they beat Coventry in the previous round.

"It's up to us to go there and stamp our authority on the game early and make sure we walk away with the win.

"Winning games becomes a habit and the Carling Cup gives us a great opportunity to continue our form.

"The perfect example that it is possible to have success in both areas is the cup run we had a couple of seasons back where it gave us a winning mentality to go on and win promotion, which is certainly on our agenda for the forthcoming season."
