Goal Hero Carlisle: We Always Believed

Posted on: Mon 16 Aug 2010

Clarke Carlisle praised the belief within the Clarets' dressing room as his injury-time leveller earned ten-man Burnley a priceless point.

Burnley looked to be heading for their first defeat of the campaign when Ipswich struck through David Norris with five minutes to go.

But even with ten men following David Edgar's unfortunate dismissal for a second yellow card 12 minutes from the end, Brian Laws' boys found it within themselves to salvage a deserved 1-1 draw.

"A point here is very welcome and I'm sure we will look back at it fondly come the end of the season," said Carlisle after he headed in Graham Alexander's corner.

"It's what this group of lads is all about. We have a great belief and a great togetherness.

"When we did go down to ten men and a goal down we still had it within our ranks to get back.

"Especially after we went 1-0 down we controlled the game and had two or three chances."

Get in there!

Carlisle's goal was his first since he struck at Southampton during Burnley's promotion run-in in 2009.

And it capped another impressive performance from the central defender who has profited from Michael Duff's injury on the opening day of the season to re-assert himself in the centre of the Clarets' defence.

"It's a shame that it's come from my colleague's misfortune because he had done everything right through pre-season and through no fault of his own he's found an injury.

"But that's where I have to seize my opportunity. I feel that I've put in two good performances and a well overdue goal is the cherry on the cake," Carlisle added.
