Marney Looking To Motor On The Road

Posted on: Thu 12 Aug 2010

Dean Marney is hoping the Clarets can get off to a good start on their travels, as they prepare for their first away trip of the new season to Ipswich Town.

Brian Laws' side will go to Portman Road in high spirits following the opening day win over Forest and the midfielder hopes they can further emphasise their promotion credentials by putting in a strong performance on the road against Roy Keane's Tractor Boys.

"Ipswich got off to a great start, but we can take a lot of positives out of our opening day performance too," admitted Marney.

"We won't be worrying about them too much, we've just got to concentrate on ourselves and go there to get a result.

"It was a massive bonus to keep a clean sheet which was the first for some time. It was a great start and hopefully we can push on because I know we can perform better.

"People would have been looking at us on Saturday, wondering if the 'relegation hangover' was still on us, but we won against a side who were challenging last year and will most likely be up there this time. I think that result sent a message out, but we're not worried about other people.

"It's massively important that we do well away from home and pick up as many points as we can. Home games will be just as important, if you want to go up you need to get points home and away.

"With the quality in the squad we have every chance to do really well and hopefully it will be nice to get the first away win on Saturday. It's a tough league though, so every game is going to be difficult."

Burnley were hit by bad news earlier in the week when it was revealed that Chris McCann will be sidelined for at least six months following cruciate knee surgery.

Fellow midfielder Marney knows what a big loss this will be for the team, but with Jack Cork returning on loan, the former Hull man insists the battle for places in the middle of the park is hotting up.

"I am gutted for Chris McCann, it's a massive loss for us. He is someone I've played against quite a few times and have always thought he is a good player," added Marney.

"From playing together in Singapore, I thought we could have been quite a good combination.

"Jack Cork looks a great addition though and you want competition for places which keeps you on your toes, because if you are not performing you are out of the side. There is a lot of competition throughout the team which is only going to help us.

"If we perform to the level we can week-in, week-out, we are going to win more games than most. It's important that we try and keep that level of performance.

"They are a great set of lads here, I've been at a few clubs, but have never seen a group of lads so together.

"I've really enjoyed it so far, the lads have made me feel settled and I'm trying to get involved in the banter as much as I can, so it's all good."
