Big Chris Hails 'Perfect Start'

Posted on: Sun 08 Aug 2010

Chris Iwelumo revelled in a 'perfect start' as he announced his arrival at Turf Moor with a match-winning performance.

The summer signing from Wolves crashed home a 45th-minute header to give the Clarets a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest on their Championship return.

Iwelumo left afterwards with a bottle of champagne to link up with the Scotland squad for their mid-week friendly in Sweden.

And while the big striker was the toast of Burnley, he was quick to share the praise with his new team-mates.

"We've got a 1-0 victory and I've got the goal so I'm delighted. But it's a team game, we are all in it together, we win together and we lose together," he said.

"It was the perfect start for me to open my account but it was a positive for everyone.

"The defence had a clean sheet and I thought it was a fantastic performance from a lot of the boys today.

"We have a great bunch of lads here and hopefully we can continue it.

"Ipswich have got a fantastic result at Middlesbrough today so will be a hard game there next week but we will go there positive and confident and see what we can do."

Welcome aboard

Having reached the play-offs last season, Forest represented a decent yardstick for the Clarets to gauge themselves against on their Football League return.

But Iwelumo knows the ability to grind out a series of positive results is what Burnley will need to make an impact following last season's relegation.

"That's what the Championship is about," he added. "Anyone can beat anyone on the day and the team that has the most consistency lifts that trophy at the end of the season.

"But we've got to keep our heads down and go one game at a time. We are a bunch of realists and our feet are on the ground.

"It was a hard fought win and I think we deserved it. They are one of the big boys and it was always a tough start but we got the goal and dug in.

"We are confident and I think that's all you can ask for really."
