BUXTON 0 BURNLEY RESERVES 3

Posted on: Fri 16 Jul 2010

Wes Fletcher was on target as the Clarets' reserve side ran out comfortable winners in their opening warm-up game in the Peak District.

The young striking prospect netted in the 75th-minute to put some gloss on a victory which had been set up by a double first-half strike from an un-named trialist.

First-team boss Brian Laws was at Silverlands to check out the potential transfer target who did his cause no harm.

The youngster took less than 30 seconds to make a mark as he dived full length to head in a cross from Alex MacDonald from the Clarets' first attack.

And his quick feet earned him a second goal eight minutes before the break when he pounced on a defensive mistake to round goalkeeper Scott Hartley and roll the ball into an empty net.

MacDonald then hit the bar early in the second half before Fletcher got on the scoresheet 15 minutes from the end with a customary classy finish.

A patient passing move ended with Chris Anderson splitting the Buxton defence for Fletcher to run clear and slide home a low right-footed shot.

Alex MacDonald was denied by the woodwork

New reserve team and development squad coach Ashley Hoskin was encouraged by the work-out against a tidy Buxton side preparing for their Evo Stick Premier League campaign.

With the core of his young squad on show, Hoskin saw plenty to build on once the Clarets had been given their flying start.

First-year professionals Michael King and Dominic Knowles both showed up well, with Knowles going close to getting himself on the scoresheet mid-way through the first half after making space on the edge of the penalty area and then shooting just wide.

Alex-Ray Harvey helped boss the midfield

MacDonald and Fletcher combined well up front at times, while Alex-Ray Harvey and Anderson controlled the centre of midfield.

MacDonald was only a whisker away from adding to the deficit when his cute chip bounced down off the bar after the Scot had been released by Chris Lynch's fine through-ball.

And Kevin Long also went close with a couple of headed efforts from second-half corners as the Clarets' youngsters made the most of their opportunity.

Burnley: Woodhead, Williams (Woods 71), King, Lynch, Long, Harvey, Anderson, Fletcher, Knowles, Trialist. Subs not used: McKee, Wilson, Edwards, Overson, D Lynch.
