Mears Looking For Derby Tonic

Posted on: Sun 21 Mar 2010

Tyrone Mears is targeting a derby win over Blackburn Rovers to revive the Clarets' survival hopes.

An agonising last-gasp 1-0 defeat at Wigan yesterday has left Burnley stuck in the bottom three of the Barclays Premier League.

But Brian Laws' men couldn't have asked for a better game to try and bounce back in than the derby showdown next Sunday at a packed Turf Moor.

"We felt a bit down. It was a big game and that has taken Wigan a few points ahead from us now. But we have to keep our heads," said Mears.

"There are still games to be played and other teams will definitely slip up between now and the end of the season, it's just important that we start again against Blackburn.

"We have got a home game coming against Blackburn, a derby, and it would be great to pick up three points and then we are looking up again.

"It's a massive game for the club to stay in the league and a massive game for the fans as well so we really need to turn up and put on a good show."

Martin Paterson shares Tyrone Mears' anguish

Mears turned in another outstanding performance at the DW Stadium and with his defensive colleagues was only seconds away from recording a first clean sheet since the end of October.

The Clarets also had chances to secure their first away win of the season as Martin Paterson hit the bar and David Nugent was denied by Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland just moments before Hugo Rodallega struck the Latics' injury-time winner.

"It was difficult to take in the last few minutes," admitted Mears.

"We had worked so hard on the preparation for this game.

"I felt we played well in the first half. Wigan came back into it in the second half but near the end we could have snatched all three points and it's gone the other way.

"Away from home it's been against us and we've not had that luck and not a lot has changed for us, especially in this game."
