Blake Fired Up For Battle

Posted on: Mon 08 Mar 2010

Robbie Blake insists everyone in the Clarets camp is fired up for the battles which lie ahead, with two crucial home clashes coming up this week, starting with the visit of Stoke City on Wednesday.

Brian Laws' side are just one point from safety and with the bottom half of the table so tightly congested, the striker knows how important these games will be to the club's survival hopes.

"It's a massive week which will be pivotal in our season. If we can get the three points on Wednesday it would set us up nicely for Wolves on Saturday," insisted Blake.

"We haven't picked up enough points away so our home games will be vital. We don't need to put pressure on ourselves because judging from our performances at home this season we know we are good enough.

"It will be no different against Stoke, we've got to attack them from the start and if we're on the front foot then I think we'll win the game.

"I don't think Stoke get the recognition they deserve, they are not just a long-throwing team about set-pieces, they have got some quality players who can pass the ball and play.

"They are a very difficult team to beat who are virtually established as a Premier League side now.

"If we can compete with them, we've then got the quality up front to cause problems and hopefully get some goals.

"We've got good attacking players and if we can keep it tight at the back that's what we'll look to build on."

Despite recent set-backs, the spirit and belief in the Burnley dressing room is stronger than ever and the 34 year-old knows these will be vital attributes to help the team recover and climb out of the relegation zone over the final 10 games of the season.

"There is certainly experience in our dressing room who have been in this situation before," admitted Blake.

"We just have to make sure we keep the spirits up with a bit of banter, there are a lot of jokers in the dressing room which helps people relax a bit more.

"If we can play without fear, we've got a better chance of picking up points.

"We always believe we can beat teams at home and I think people know we are a handful at Turf Moor.

"If we keep performing at home, we'll get the points we need. It's the team spirit that gets us through this which is what we need at this moment in time.

"We've got every belief that teams coming to Turf Moor will be in for a game and we've got to take that forward for our two games this week."

"If you would have said at the start of the season we would be one point away from safety, with ten games to go, everybody would have taken it and with six of those at home it gives us a big lift of staying in this league.

"Teams aren't winning around us and we've got to capitalise on that by getting some positive results this week.

"Two wins can take you right out of it and we've got to take heart from that with the two home games we've got coming up."

Many outsiders have already condemned the Clarets to the Championship, but Blake insists this can work in the club's favour as they look to prove the pundits wrong by going about their business quietly under the radar.

"We are not expected to stay in this league but the teams in and around us are. These two games are high pressure because we want to stay in this league," added Blake.

"I don't think it's a bad thing putting pressure on yourselves; you want to have that pressure as a footballer and be pitting your wits against the best players in the country.

"People are entitled to write us off, that's their opinion, but with 10 games to go I think it's a bit harsh.

"We know as a group of players we are good enough to stay in this league and the pressure isn't on us.

"We've just got to believe in ourselves and keep picking up the points at home. If we could nick an away win that would be a big boost.

"It's very tight and nervy, there are about six teams that could go down which is a bonus for us.

"It's a tough league; we knew there would be times when we would struggle.

"But it's nice that we have got two homes game coming up to hopefully get some points on the board. I don't think you can set any targets, but four wins might just be enough."
