PREVIEW: Burnley U23s v Leicester City U23s

Clarets aim to keep run going to reach PL Cup quarter-finals

14 March 2019

Steve Stone is calling on his young Clarets to again rise to the occasion as they chase a place in the quarter-finals of the Premier League Cup.

The Under-23s face Leicester City at the Barnfield Training Centre on Friday in a last-16 tie which is being played behind closed doors.

The Foxes - semi-finalists last season - play their football in the top tier of Premier League Two and on Wednesday night lost on penalties to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Premier League International Cup.

But Burnley got past fellow Category One sides Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion to top their qualifying group and reach the knock-out stages of the competition.

And Stone is hoping to keep the run going and keep alive the possibility of success in three competitions with a play-off challenge in the Professional Development League to pursue and a Lancashire FA Senior Cup final date with Blackburn Rovers to come.

“We’ve done well to get out of the group,” said the Under-23s’ boss, whose side went unbeaten in five games after losing their opening fixture to Bournemouth and has lost just once in 10 games in all competitions.

“That’s all credit to the players and it’s now for them to go and take it on.

“I’ll set them up in a way I know how to win a football match and they’ve got to go and deliver it and I’m sure they will. I know they’ll be focused.”

Friday’s match kick-offs at 2.30pm but is not open to spectators.

Coverage will be available across the club’s media channels.
