Burnley’s U18s cruised to a 3-0 victory in their opening pre-season fixture at St George’s Park, as a Jayden Major brace and a second-half strike from Jake Rooney was enough for the Clarets to secure the win.
It was a youthful Burnley side with two different elevens featuring in each half, with not one second year scholar featuring in the second half.
A quiet opening 20 minutes down at St George’s Park, as both sides looked to get into the rhythm of things in their opening pre-season fixture.
Bournemouth, who have been based down at the England HQ all week for a training camp, came close to taking the lead, as Christian Saydee glanced a header just wide of the post from a corner.
However, it was the Clarets that took the lead just before the half-hour mark, as Major pounced on a loose ball and fired home the opener for Tony Philliskirk’s side.
The Cherries looked to reply shortly after, as winger Luke Pardoe cut inside and fired just wide of Harry Allen’s post.
But it was the Lancashire side that doubled their lead just before the break, as Major slotted home his and Burnley’s second of the afternoon.
A change of team at half-time saw all 11 players substituted for a new 11 to take on the second half.
And Burnley were cruising and still on the front foot, as defender Rooney who tucked home the Clarets’ third of the afternoon just before the hour mark.
Just over 10 minutes later, the Cherries were awarded a penalty kick, however, Lewis Thomas on his Burnley debut denied the Bournemouth striker from the spot to keep the Clarets well infront.
And despite South coast's sides efforts at getting themselves back into the game, Philliskirk's side did enough to secure a victory in their first run-out of 2019/20.
