Preview: Burnley U18s v AFC Bournemouth U18s

Tony Philliskirk’s side travel to St Georges Park for opening friendly against the Cherries.

12 July 2019

Burnley’s U18s will kick off their pre-season campaign tomorrow (Saturday) at St George’s Park against AFC Bournemouth.

Philliskirk’s side reported back to the Barnfield Training Centre last Monday for their first day as a new group of scholars - and this weekend will see them play their first game.

And the U18 Head Coach has nothing but praise for his new-look squad, as they come towards the end of their second week of high-intensity training, with their first pre-season match looming.

Philliskirk said: “First of all, I have to be very praise-worthy of the lads, their attitude and application this week has been excellent.

“We had our gaffer's day on Tuesday, which was brutal, and it is a really tough test for all the lads.

“It is a great test not just physically but mentally as well.

“There wasn't a single moan throughout the whole day and the lads' application towards the day, and the week since coming back, has been great.”

The youth team boss has a plan in place for the weekend, with 22 players on the agenda to travel and all get at-least 45 minutes each at the England HQ.

With second year scholars Matty Rain, Edon Pruti, Mitch George and first year scholar Ben Woods out in Poland with Steve Stone’s U23 training camp, Philliskirk admits their will be a few younger faces and trialists making up the travelling party to the national base.

“They are all looking forward to their first game down at St George’s Park against Bournemouth on Saturday," he added.

“Every player will get 45 minutes each, and  two different 11’s in each half will be the plan.

“Obviously we are a bit low on usual numbers with four of the laDs away in Poland with the U23s.

“We have a couple of trialistS that will also be playing a part and then a couple of U16s as well, to make up the travelling contingent.

“It’s just a good moment for us to try and do a few things we have been working on in training.”

Live updates will be available on Twitter (@Burnleyofficial) throughout the match which kicks off at 12pm, followed by a report and reaction.
