U23's and Youths Round-Up

A close look at how both sides have got on so far this season

The Clarets U23s and youth team have both enjoyed solid, if disrupted starts to their respective league seasons.

Following the departure of Michael Duff to Cheltenham, the development squad - under the temporary stewardship of Jon Pepper - currently sit fifth in the Professional Development League Northern Division, following four wins, four losses and a draw.

Meanwhile the youth team, again seeking new leadership after head coach Danny Cadamarteri left the club last month, currently lie third in the U18 Professional Development League Northen Division, with six wins, a draw and two losses to their name.

The U18’s are also unbeaten in their last four matches under Townson, earning a credible three wins and a draw.

Townson’s side are also undefeated at home, with five wins out of five in all competitions at the Barnfield Training Centre.

The youth side face Preston North End in the Lancashire Youth Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday, 23rd October, after seeing out Bolton Wanderers in the previous round.

But before then, the teenagers can rise to top of the table this weekend with a win, depending on Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday’s results.

Top-scorer Michael Fowler, 17, has hit seven goals for the youth team this season, and is currently enjoying a work experience loan at Radcliffe Borough after impressing in his previous loan spell at Padiham.

The Clarets have also allowed a handful of teenagers to go out on work experience loans, including Ethan Kershaw, who has joined Barnoldswick Town, Richard Taylor to Colne and Will Harris linking up with Nelson.

The U23’s will be competing in the Premier League Cup for the third consecutive season, the Clarets are in a group with AFC Bournemouth, Liverpool and West Brom.

The development squad, bounced back from their defeat at Bournemouth in their opening Premier League Cup fixture, clawing a point at Elland Road against Leeds United in the league, despite being 2-0 down with 30 minutes to play.

Pepper’s side are also through to the next round of the Senior Lancashire Cup, after cruising past Barrow 4-0 in the first round.

Dan Agyei is currently the top-scorer for the development squad. The 21-year-old striker has hit seven goals in all competitions, supported by Tinashe Chakwana, who sits behind him on four goals.

The U23's are back in action on Monday 22nd October at Curzon Ashton's Tameside Stadium, with a 2:00pm kick off.
