The Samaritans have thanked Burnley staff and supporters for making their sponsorship of the Brighton game a huge success.
The charity used the day to raise awareness of their confidential 24-hour helpline, and raise their profile in the wider community.
Ian Hartley, local Director for the Samaritans, said: “It was another great day from our point of view.
“We had some great feedback from the fans, collected some much-needed funds and, importantly, heard some heart-warming stories from fans that had used our service after learning about us at Burnley FC games.”
Since launching their confidential 24 hour a day FREEPHONE (116 123) back in 2015, when the Samaritans first started working with Burnley FC, local listening volunteers now take over 37,000 calls per year.
While many people believe the Samaritans are only there to listen when people feel suicidal, Ian stressed:“We offer a safe place for you to talk any time you like, in your own way – about whatever’s getting to you.
“You don’t have to be suicidal. People contact us for many different reasons.
“We're carefully trained to put aside any personal beliefs and we are totally non-judgemental.
“And because you're talking to a stranger, it can be easier to talk about your feelings “
Victoria Haworth, who shortly takes over from Ian as Director, added: "We had a number of Burnley FC fans who talked to us on the day about volunteering.
“You can make an amazing difference at Samaritans, helping to support people when they are going through a difficult time in their lives.
“We welcome and value every volunteer. Whether volunteering as a listening or non-listening volunteer, we’d love to hear from you.
“Whatever your interests, experience or skills, we have a role for you, and we will train, mentor and support you in whatever role you choose to do.”
