It’s been a roller-coaster of a season for the Burnley FC Ladies first team, who stand on the brink of celebrating their most successful season on record.
The Lady Clarets entertain CMB Ladies this weekend in their final game of the season, with the team hoping for the point they need to clinch the North-West Women’s Regional Football League title.
First Team Manager, Matt Bee, said: “This season has been a fantastic journey for the ladies team.
“My first season at the club was about making necessary changes to the squad and tactical framework to lay the foundations for success the following season.
“I always had a belief that we would have a strong season and full credit to the players because they have worked tirelessly since August.
“This season has been by far the best in the club’s history and we sit needing just one point to secure a historic promotion.
“This, coupled with a fantastic FA Cup run, has shown just how well we have done and I am proud of what we have achieved.”
The fixtures got off to a strong start but a dip in league form around Christmas time, along with new signings and some departures, meant the team and coaching staff had to pull together to climb up the table.
In tandem with the league, the Lady Clarets enjoyed a successful run in the FA Cup.
During the preliminary rounds the Clarets beat opposition from squads in higher divisions to finally face top Premier League side Cardiff City Ladies in the third-round of the competition, the furthest stage Burnley FC Ladies had ever reached.
Bee added: “The overall FA Cup journey was unbelievable and the performances the team put in were fantastic.”
“For a club of our current size to be in the third round of the historic competition was brilliant, and we not only competed but beat teams from the Women’s Premier League along the way.
“I’m immensely proud of the players and we have shown that we can hold our own at the top levels of the women’s game and hopefully we can use this as a platform to move forward.”
The team did move forward with force and they now sit pretty at the top of the table, one tantalising point away from promotion into the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division 1.
