Jon Walters continued his road to recovery on Good Friday after completing 90 minutes in a 1-0 defeat for the U23s side away at Sheffield United.
Tyler Smith’s 56th minute goal proved to be the difference between the two sides.
But the positive was a full game for Irish international Walters, whose niggling knee injury had ruled him out of action since January.
The hosts had the first real opportunity of the game when Smith found space in the area, before forcing Conor Mitchell into a smart save with Teddy Perkins clearing the danger.
In a very even first half, neither side had any great chances, although Burnley came close 10 minutes before the break when Walters picked out Tinashe Chakwana in the box with a perfectly-timed cross. However the young striker headed just over the bar.
And United made them pay, taking the lead 10 minutes into the second-half through Smith, who stabbed the ball home from a corner.
The Clarets pushed for an equaliser and came close when Olatunde Bayode found Walters in the area, but his header rolled just wide of the post.
And despite Burnley’s best efforts, it looked to be the home side who would strike next as Mitchell did terrifically to deny Smith then Hutchinson from close range.
