Nick Pope is still waiting for the chance to win a first international cap after watching England’s World Cup warm-up win over Nigeria from the Wembley bench.

Jordan Pickford played in goal throughout England’s 2-1 victory in their penultimate game ahead of the World Cup Finals in Russia later this month.

Clarets keeper Pope was named among the substitutes, alongside Jack Butland and Turf Moor team-mate Tom Heaton who is with the squad as back-up ahead of their departure to Russia.

Gareth Southgate’s side complete their home-based preparations next Thursday night with a friendly against Costa Rica at Elland Road.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson played the full 90 minutes as Iceland continued their preparations for a first appearance at the finals with a 3-2 defeat to Norway.

And in Dublin, the Burnley trio of Jeff Hendrick, Kevin Long and Jon Walters all featured as the Republic of Ireland beat the United States 2-1 in a farewell match for Irish stalwart John O’Shea.

Long and Walters both played the full 90 minutes, while midfielder Hendrick completed 83 minutes on his return from injury.
