The Burnley striker missed the final game of the Premier League season in May after falling on his shoulder at Arsenal.
But Barnes, who reported back to the Barnfield Training Centre early for pre-season to complete his rehabilitation, is excited to get back on the goal trail again.
He said: “It’s a bit lonely in here, not seeing all the boys, but I can’t wait to see them next week.
“I‘ve been with the physios just trying to get the shoulder going and get it moving. It will be six weeks on Wednesday since the operation, so it’s all on track.
‘‘It was a hard one to take, with one game to go, and then this happened, but so be it. We finished on a high and that’s the main thing.
“It’s not about me; it’s about how the team have done throughout the season and we did terrific."
Barnes was head-to-head with rival Chris Wood for the Clarets’ golden boot when his injury struck at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium.
And the 28-year-old is eager to make up for lost time, with the Clarets’ pre-season campaign being given extra spice with the added demands of European football in the shape of a Europa League second qualifying round double-header against Aberdeen.
He added: “It’s another challenge ahead of us, it’s going to be a tough game but whoever we’d have drawn in the competition it would have been tough, so it will be one the boys will look forward to, and hopefully we can go there and win.
“Everyone’s up for it, everyone knows it’s a competitive game and wants to win so we’ll just take it in our stride.
“It couldn’t be better for us and hopefully we will end up going through to the next round.”
Barnes, who ended last season with 10 goals in all competitions, added: “It’s been really good to spend time over the summer with my family, relax and put my feet up a little bit.
"Throughout this last month I’ve just tried to get back into the swing of things as much as I can do and getting ready for next week.”
The rest of the first squad will join Ashley in training next Monday in preparation for the 2018/19 season.
