JBG Back For The Clarets

Winger set for friendly action after return from World Cup duty

19 July 2018

Johann Berg Gudmundsson is in line to make his first appearance since the World Cup Finals as the Clarets continue their pre-season build-up with twin friendlies on Friday night.

Boss Sean Dyche will split his first-team squad across the two games at Macclesfield Town and Curzon Ashton (both kick-off 7.45pm).

And Gudmundsson is set to be involved after returning to club duty this week.

The Iceland international was given a break following his country’s exit from the tournament in Russia at the group stage.

But after resuming training with the Clarets on Monday, the winger is expected to play some part in one of the two games.

Robbie Brady was part of the training camp in Ireland

Robbie Brady could also get his first taste of action in public since the knee injury he sustained last December, as the Republic of Ireland international closes in on a return to full fitness.

Steven Defour and Ashley Barnes won’t be involved, and goalkeeper Nick Pope is still to return from his post-World Cup break.

But the rest of the Clarets’ senior players will be in action as Dyche looks to give game time to as many players as possible with the start of the Europa League just a week away and the Premier League kicking off in three weeks’ time.

Dyche will lead the side at Macclesfield, who are back in the Football League after winning the National League title last season.

Former Burnley midfielder and assistant manager Mark Yates has since taken over at the Moss Rose and will take charge for his first home game on Friday night.

Admission at Macclesfield is £10 for adults and £5 concessions.

The Clarets will also take a strong side to National League North side Curzon Ashton, where the under-23s will again play most of their home games in the Professional Development League this season.

Admission at the Tameside Stadium is £5 adults, £3 concessions, £3 under-18s and students (with ID), under-16s free.
