Viva Espanyol For Last Turf Moor Friendly

Clarets face La Liga side as countdown completed

3 August 2018

The Clarets wind up their ‘pre-season’ programme with a friendly against Spanish side Espanyol at Turf Moor on Sunday (kick-off 1.30pm).

Sean Dyche’s side has, of course, already played two competitive games to get past Aberdeen in the Europa League.

And next week they fly out to Turkey for the first leg of their third qualifying-round tie against Turkish outfit Istanbul Basaksehir.

But planning is still going on for the Premier League kick-off at Southampton on Sunday, 12 August and after facing Montpellier last weekend, the Clarets sign off their friendlies with a visit from the La Liga side.

Dyche will look to add further fitness to his squad ahead of the trip to St Mary’s Stadium, although admits he faces a tricky selection with a busy programme ahead and a number of injuries to deal with.

David Lopez has just signed a new long-term contract at Espanyol

Steven Defour and Robbie Brady aren’t yet ready to return and both Chris Wood (hip) and Aaron Lennon (hamstring) picked up knocks in Thursday night’s second-leg win over the Dons.

The Clarets therefore may have a small number of senior players on duty but are likely to dip into the under-23 squad, who have spent this week at a training base in Lilleshall.

Espanyol, who finished 11th in the Spanish top flight last season, visit Burnley following a week-long training camp in the United States.

The ‘Budgerigars’ were based in Richmond, Virginia and won the two friendlies they played against Richmond Kickers and Cincinnati.

Espanyol, who brought former player and coach Rubi back to the club as manager earlier this summer, start their league season at Celta Vigo on Saturday, 18 August.
