Vokes: We've Got That Winning Feeling

Super-sub Sam Vokes sums up Clarets' spirit in win at Watford

7 April 2018

Sam Vokes saluted the Clarets’ winning feeling as they came from behind to keep rolling back the years.

Watford went 1-0 up through Argentina international Roberto Pereyra as they looked to extend their six-match unbeaten home run.

But Vokes sparked a dramatic fightback as he scored the equaliser with his first touch after coming off the bench in the 70th minute.

And three minutes later Jack Cork headed in the winner as Sean Dyche’s side became the first Burnley team to win three successive away games in the top tier since 1973 and the first to win four in a row in the top flight for 50 years.

“It was a great win. The boys have got that winning feeling now and we never know when we’re beaten at the minute,” said Vokes, who steered home a mis-cued header from Watford defender Adrian Mariappa to claim his fourth goal of the season 22 seconds after coming onto the pitch.

“It’s good in games like that, especially when you go 1-0 down, to turn it around.

“We had a free-kick in a great position, so I was trying to get my clothes off as quickly as possible to get on for that.

“It was nice to have an impact early on and when the ball dropped at my feet to tuck it away.”

The Clarets firmed up their grip on seventh place in Premier League as they moved six points ahead of Leicester City, who visit Turf Moor next Saturday.

And finishing in that position would be enough to secure a place in the Europa League should any side but Southampton of the FA Cup semi-finalists go on to win the trophy.

Vokes added: “It’s a great group of lads. We got on well and off the pitch and I think that shows.

“We believe we can keep going and take it on. We’ve got that freedom now until the end of the season to see where we can finish.

“We are sixth points clear in that place now. It’s down to us. We’ve got some big games coming up and we’ll take them on and see where it takes us.”
